The tree is up…and so far has stayed vertical, despite Albie’s interest in both it and the decorations. We bought him a bow with bells on for his climbing area, which proved to be an inspired purchase as he was so preoccupied by that, he left us free to put up the tree and decorate it.
We found a bumper pack of one hundred baubles, which was ideal. This is the third time we have had to buy the Christmas tree decorating basics. We bought them in Leicester, but gave them away when we moved to Munich – we only had a car full of stuff and Christmas Tree decorations were definitely not that high on the list of things to keep. We have a tree the first year in Munich (we were back in England so didn’t seem the point) or in Sevilla (back in England again, not that it was really the thing to do there). We had to start from scratch last year for our tree in Munich, but then gave them away again when we packed to come here, trying to keep our amount of belongings as minimal as possible. In a way this worked out, as it would have been more annoying buying decorations knowing that we already had them but they were yet to be shipped. The lights of course we would have needed to buy all along with the different plugs and voltages.
Back to now, and the tree smells so good! It was such a mission to buy one last year that had that Christmas-tree scent. T’s poor mother was dragged around the garden centre as we sniffed each and every tree. The ones that did smell looked pretty dismal and were very prickly, but we were adamant we wanted smell over appearance and prickle-free hands and feet.
When we went to buy this tree, from a place in the supermarket carpark, the guy gave me a very funny look when I asked him if they all smelt. “Yeh, ‘course they do!” Oh, OK. That was me told. I stayed quiet.
We bought a big one – 6 ft high – as we haven’t really got any furniture and it fills up the big empty space we have in the corner of the room.

We haven’t really gone overboard with decorating the rest of the apartment – partly because we have no surfaces to put things on, partly because they have to be well out of Albie’s reach, and partly because we have some in our stuff (now, on a ship – hopefully) and don’t want to duplicate.
But the smell as we walk past it is making December feel like it should, and has enough sparkle to make us feel Christmassy – hopefully it will last until the Day itself… I think we will leave the presents behind closed doors until Christmas Day as Trouble loves nothing more than chewing ribbon and shredding paper …
